Let's talk about our ideas/proposals for a spiritual successor to Happy Tree Friends if we have them.

I've been mulling over a number of ideas for a spiritual successor myself, but I'm afraid that if I did make one, I wouldn't be able to resist the urge to really muck it up with all my own fetishes and aesthetic preferences which would make such a spiritual successor highly alien and inaccessible to many people who were/are part of HTF's audience and basically it would end up... not having a lot in common with HTF really.

Basically though? there'd be cute furries, weird monsters, and horrific landscapes. That sounds innocent enough on paper but you haven't seen what I'd try to do if I actually went through with that plan.

ALTERNATIVELY: if you personally got a chance to REVIVE HTF, what changes would you make?

Let's face it, there are a number of things about HTF that could be better or improved, and there are a number of things about HTF that didn't need to exist at all in the first place. Among other things, if I got to change Happy Tree Friends I would:
  • expand Giggles' role from being an armcandy prop to a more active character (probably expand upon the sort of things she did in Dunce Upon A Time and Every Litter Bit Hurts where she has a starring and very active role)
  • Eliminate Flippy because he's cringey edgy shit also because Lammy does everything he does better
  • Perhaps have more girls.
  • maybe change up the style to have more than one body type

ALTERNATIVELY ALTERNATIVELY: are there any other works that are similar enough to HTF (either inspired by it or otherwise) that we can also get into

The closest thing I can find to HTF that isn't HTF is Al Columbia's work- he combines a cutesy Fleischeresque look with gore, horror, and some very gross and horrific subject matter- And I'm speaking with particular reference to his Pim and Francie comics, which feature a duo of cute kids who get into trouble and CAUSE trouble

  • Listening to: Ween- Ocean Man
  • Playing: Hylics

How would you put this idea into practice? ie: as web comic, animated shorts, or a full 11-15 min animation.

And if so who is going to put it into action? You or are you looking to hire others to help.

Hey hey now.

This isn't a practicalities thread this is a wishful thinking thread. You're supposed to answer with what you'd wanna do with HTF if you're able to reboot it.

I'm on mobile so I can't check if I mentioned it in the journal already- but I have a HTF inspired idea I wanna work with.

My plan is to make a sketchbook/artbook of sorts with images that loosely form a narrative when looked at together.

If you've ever seen Al Columbia's Pim and Francie you'll know what I mean. He's a noted cartoonist who released a "graphic novel" involving his two characters Pim and Francie which is comprised entirely of FRAGMENTS of stories and attempts at making a proper full book that fell through instead of a single complete coherent story...

And then he compiled all those "fragments" and aborted stories and the result is... Really eerie. Scary stories get really EXTRA scary when they're inexplicable and not too much is told to us.

It's like something was transmitted into this world from another one but you don't get the full message.

I would love to do something like that but with HTF inspired furry characters

Oh ok,

If I was able to reboot HTF, I would start over small and introduce 4 or 5 of the main characters.
Make a few episodes dedicated to the previously mentioned characters, then expand the rooster
little by little.

I would love to see some of your sketchbook ideas even, if they are still W.I.Ps (I love to spoil myself.)

I haven't been able to work on the sketchbook or any of the images I would like to put in it.

So far though all I've done is design a character I MIGHT use for it.

I really like this puppy I designed and I wanna use her in this idea if possible

hmmm,

I'm looking up pictures of black and white dogs online and Border Collies and Australian Shepherds seem closer to this little pup than German Sheps do

lets say Flaky was MtF trans in this reboot thing, how would the audience be able to tell if her and the characters don't talk? Also I am SO for more new females and less green bear

Presumably because we say so. People accepted Flaky as a girl when the creators said so many years ago (even if they went back on that, as I'll detail later)

Also there's nothing stopping her from being a trans girl RIGHT NOW in the current incarnation of HTF. The creators stated in a Reddit AMA that Flaky is literally whatever you headcanon them as. I know people who ALREADY headcanon her as being a trans girl.

A few trans women have told me that they found Flaky relatable. It has something to do with their behavior, and that whole "not knowing which bathroom to use safely" situation (in real life, trans women find it difficult to use the bathroom in public because using one could get them killed and using the other could get them accused of being a predator), and a handful of other things.

Also. Just FYI "MtF trans" and "FtM trans" are outdated terms and should be used with caution

-Because transphobic people have used the "biology" and "original/birth gender" of trans people to hurt them, deny them their identities, and usually their rights.

-Trans women were ALWAYS women, and trans men were ALWAYS men. They were not "originally" ANYTHING but. the terms "MtF" and "FtM" implies otherwise.

-It places emphasis on physically transitioning and sex reassignment surgery, which many trans men and women cannot access.

so instead of saying "MtF trans", you say "trans woman" and instead of "FtM trans" you say "trans man". No matter what "stage" of transitioning they are at.

to be clear, you should actually refer to people by whatever they TELL you to call them. No matter how ridiculous it might seem.

Oh sorry, I try to be politically correct and not to offend anyone I just didn't know those were outdated terms. And as for my headcanon on Flaky I personally like the idea for her being a trans girl because it makes since for her lack of eyelashes but she still seems rather feminine and for the bathroom thing (also If I remember correctly flaky used the girls room in that episode in the end so maybe she bravened up and went with her gut on that) though I still like cis Flaky just the same, Cuz' Flaky's just so cute no matter what

If I recall correctly, IRL dudes tend to have bigger eyelashes than girls so a trans girl Flaky would not have that issue

actually come to think of it- in order to be recognized as girls in a transphobic society trans women often have to stick to greater standards of femininity than cis women do. Any deviation from that norm and transphobes deride them as "males" from all corners.

... GIGGLES could be a trans girl

So I guess Giggles or Flaky could possibly be trans girls but what about the boys in the show, out of all the males who do you think could be a trans boy?

Perhaps Mime?

I think I kinda like the idea of Mime being a trans boy, Perhaps he is a reindeer then, or went through some hormonal therapy to grow his antlers out.

Since he dressed as Rudolph him being a reindeer would make sense.

Alternatively there ARE cases of female deer sprouting antlers iirc (and on a related note there is at least one case of a lioness sprouting a mane)

So you're saying add ONE new character? Any ideas what this character would be like?

I was thinking more along the lines of MULTIPLE new characters and perhaps a cast OVERHAUL.

More girls for one to even out the ratio of boys to non boys. Perhaps more NB/Trans characters like Flaky. Perhaps make some of the existing characters gay or bi...

And oh let's can Disco Bear. His aggressive heterosexuality is not really all that fun

i think htf is better dead. it's had its run for a long time, it's better as a relic that can be appreciated as a nostalgic type thing

it's best as a kind of obscure memorable relic of the internet that lives on in its undying fanbase

plus htf doesn't seem to be anything dead in japan, it's still pretty popular there isn't it? they've even had their own japan-exclusive htf content

however, i do think htf is potential for any kind of rebooting. but it would have to be different. i've always thought htf had so much wasted potential just focusing on gore humor, the actual characters and their unique, humorous personalities / designs are overlooked by all the edgy shock value gore

in short,, htf should either be left dead or rebooted as something a little different. keep the characters, change the type of humor and setting.

so you're saying give it a complete paradigm shift and turn one of the original series' biggest trademarks (over-the-top gore) into a secondary element?

That might not work out well with the audience for the original show, I think.

i don't think gore should entirely be removed from the factor obviously it's jsut there should be more ways of humor too. and i don't mean typical trashy "adult humor" or anything, just something more clever than the same How many more things can this guy get killed by!

except i seem to recall that with HTF it wasn't so much about "how many" deaths as much as HOW they happened. Many of the deaths seemed to go for a "what the fuck, how did THAT- WHY??" element

how bout we just let it die, that's what happens in the show anyway...a lot of dying. *ba dum tss*

I don't have very good conversation to add to this because I haven't ever really watched watched HTF, but imo it seems like it's beating a dead horse at this point...in the end the bulk of it is just shock humor and i feel like there wasn't anything really deep or character development-y of the entire show. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)

I understand wanting to have more character focus instead of pitching stereotypes for them so they can play a meaningless/predictable role tho; but with HTF's nature as a show itself, it seems like it would be kind of hard to pull it off? Does that make sense?

yeah it's mostly shock humor and cute animals and little else to it. No continuity or overarching storyline or anything or any real depth.

I wasn't necessarily implying that we insert some, though I don't think it's impossible- I do seem to recall that there ARE shows which manage to get good characterization and character development in spite of huge discontinuity between episodes (Though all the examples I can think of involve plot elements like time loops and shit to explain why characters can literally die and be okay in the next episode).

But yeah, we could just have HTF play out as usual only we use the five minutes between a character's introduction and horrible demise to reveal something new about them and how they relate to the world around them, and how the world works in general, maybe, and boom there you go, you've somehow managed to add some kind of depth to Happy Tree Friends

Listen: I have not been watching this shitty little show as long as some people, and I know it has had breaks longer than this, but there has been no word of any new content for over two or three years now, most people see it and roll their eyes, and a main character designer/ writer/ animator/ voice actor has left, expressing remorse for not being able to do more with it being under Mondo, and he's said himself he really misses what it was and how it helped him through rough times.

I think it's safe to say that Happy Tree Friends is dead. I doubt Mondo has any further plans for it. Should I build the money for it, I would genuinely like to buy the rights to it and ask Kenn to work on it again. Even if it's not the same exact thing, and even though most people just see it as a poor, repetitive attempt at shock humor, I'd love to do more with it and I feel safe saying Kenn would too.

That may be a little out of my league, but I don't know if Mondo would even be too reluctant to let it go at this point.

I think that's a pretty interesting plan though even if you think it's "out of your league". I would love to imagine how that'd play out.

Has Kenn actually spoken about what he wanted to do with HTF if he had the chance to do so but wasn't allowed to?

Not so much specific stuff as much as missing it. Even while he was working on it, being one of the highest in charge of the show itself, he just pitched ideas, got them approved, and the rest was following orders mostly. I know he did most storyboards too, but those would also have to have been OKed, then he would have to work under Mondo's schedule, making as many episodes as Mondo said that were as long as Mondo said, etc. When Kenn was talking about the movie he seemed pretty reluctant about it and didn't seem to have much he wanted to do with it, he seemed to really ONLY be doing it because, you guessed it, Mondo said. I'm guessing most of all he just wanted free reign to do what he wanted with his own damn characters.

I remember a few things on the blog on the official site he talked about would have liking to have done, including an "anime" episode ( guessing he meant humanizations in general, anime was just the most popular thing at the time and let's face it a lot of fans are weeaboos ), but not thinking he'd have the skill or even *cough* time to do it. He used to post a lot of sketches with ideas too, that probably were part of pitches, and I think could have worked.... had they been approved.

I guess what I would WANT to do is to continue making episodes as they were, and then work on something like the whole AU thing I had going at the same time as kind of a special/ "canon AU". Sort of like how Naruto for example had that Rock Lee's Youthful Summer mini comic that'd been going along the main comic.

Or maybe it'd be the other way around since the episodes don't really carry a plot altogether.

canon AU for a reboot, eh? I think you've discussed some of that with me before? If you're at the helm it's bound to be pretty good.

I just hope the recent bout of shitty cartoon reboots hasn't killed all faith in the idea of reboots
